🎭 THE MACCABEAN WAR — A Sacred Operetta Oratorio in Seven Sections

SECTION I — THE DECREE

🎙️ Narration 1

In the days of Antiochus Epiphanes, a great darkness fell upon Judah.
The law of our fathers was forbidden.
The Temple in Jerusalem—once the dwelling of the Most High—was defiled.

Idols stood upon the altar.
The sacred oil was spilled, the covenant mocked.
Many fell away in fear… but a remnant kept their faith in silence.

This is their story—of darkness, and of the flame that would not die.

🎶 Opening Lament

The altar burns with foreign flame,
The holy oil is spilled like tears.
Ha-Shem, our lamps are cold and broken,
Our hearts are hollowed by our fears.

The songs of Zion turned to sighs,
Our harps unstrung, our voices dim.
Ha-Shem, can light return from shadow?
Will You remember us again?

🎶 The Priest’s Recitative

The king has spoken — no Torah shall be read,
No covenant kept, no Sabbath remembered.
The scrolls are torn, their ashes scattered,
And idols defile the House of God.

Once it burned sevenfold in glory,
Now only smoke remains.
The faithful hide in caves and valleys;
The righteous are slain in the streets.

They may take our temple,
But not our faith.

💔 ENSEMBLE – “The Darkness Falls”

(Full chorus builds from whisper to lament)

Darkness falls upon Jerusalem,
But faith endures in trembling hearts.
Though idols dance upon the altar,
The covenant shall not depart.

Ha-Shem, though You seem hidden,
Your name is fire sealed in stone.
When the night has swallowed Zion —
Let Your dawn return, Ha-Shem, alone.

🎙️ Narration 2

The people wept in secret.
Their harps were hung upon the walls, their songs turned to ashes.
But among them were those who whispered,
“Ha-Shem will remember. His light has not gone out forever.”

And so, in the small town of Modi’in… a spark was kindled.

SECTION II — THE SPARK (At Modi’in)

🎙️ Narration 1 – The Idol at Modi’in

In the town of Modi’in, the soldiers came with their idols.
They demanded sacrifice to their gods and food forbidden by the Law.

Among the people stood an old priest named Mattathias —
a man of Judah, strong in faith and in rage.

When they ordered him to bow, he refused.
When another Israelite stepped forward to betray the covenant,
Mattathias struck him down before the altar.

Thus the spark was lit —
and the night of oppression met the flame of faith.

🎶 Song 1 – Mattathias’ Defiance

I will not bow to false fire,
Nor eat the bread of shame!
Let the sword of faith be lifted high —
Ha-Shem! Be my name!

The altar of stone is broken,
But the heart of Judah burns.
Who will rise for the covenant?
Who will stand for Ha-Shem?

🎶 Song 2 – The Rally of the Faithful

Rise, sons of light! The hour is near!
The tyrant’s voice shall fall to fear.
March from the hills, from every land —
Ha-Shem! Ha-Shem! The sword in our hand!

Faith is our banner, the covenant flame,
Judah shall fight in the holy name!
Ha-Shem leads us, the battle begun,
Freedom shall rise with the dawn of the sun!

🎶 Song 3 – Prayer Before Flight and Battle

Ha-Shem, be with Your people now,
As we take the road of flame.
Guard our hearts, our sons, our vow —
We fight in Your holy name.

If we fall, remember our cry;
If we live, let Zion stand.
Your light shall burn, though we may die —
Ha-Shem, guide our hand.

🎙️ Narration 2 – The Flame Takes Hold

Mattathias and his sons fled into the hills.
There, they called the faithful to rise and join them.

The sound of footsteps echoed through the valleys —
farmers, shepherds, scribes, and soldiers coming together as one people.

The spark had become a flame,
and Judah Maccabee would bear its light.

Soon, the enemy would learn that faith cannot be broken.

⚔️ SECTION III — RISE OF JUDAH

🎙️ Narration 1 – The Gathering of the Faithful

From the caves and mountains, the faithful gathered.
Farmers laid down their plows. Shepherds left their flocks.
Old soldiers returned to the field once more.

Among them stood Judah, son of Mattathias —
a warrior of faith, and a leader chosen by the people.

He spoke not of vengeance, but of covenant.
His sword was the word of Ha-Shem, his shield the promise of freedom.

And so they rose together, the sons of light,
to reclaim their land and the honor of their God.

🎶 Song 1 – The Call to Arms

Gather the tribes, O sons of light,
Lift up the banners, prepare for the fight!
Through valley and mountain our voices ring,
Ha-Shem! Ha-Shem! Our Lord and King!

No fear shall bind the faithful band,
The covenant flame shall fill the land.
Rise up, rise up, Jerusalem’s call!
Ha-Shem! Ha-Shem! Be with us all!

🎶 Song 2 – Judah’s Aria: “The Sword of Faith”

The sword of faith is forged in fire,
Not hatred’s flame, but sacred ire.
For every heart that still believes,
Ha-Shem, Your strength our hand receives.

I fight not for glory, nor crown of gold,
But the promise our fathers told.
Let tyrants tremble, let idols fall —
Ha-Shem, be the shield of all!

🎶 Song 3 – Chorus of the Faithful (Victory Anticipated)

March, march, children of Zion’s flame,
Carry the word and the holy name!
The hills resound, the heavens ring,
Ha-Shem our strength, our King!

Freedom’s dawn is breaking bright,
Out of darkness comes the light!
Judah leads and Judah stands —
Ha-Shem! Guide our hands!

🎙️ Narration 2 – The March to War

The armies of Judah marched beneath the stars.
No banners of gold, no crowns or kings — only faith to guide them.

They moved in silence, hearts beating as one,
each step an offering, each breath a prayer.

Before them waited the might of the Seleucid empire —
steel and elephants, numbers without end.

But within them burned the light of Ha-Shem.
And that light would not be conquered.

⚔️ SECTION IV — THE BATTLE OF EMMAUS

🎙️ Narration 1 – Before the Battle

Before the dawn, Judah gathered his men.
The valley of Emmaus lay silent beneath the stars.
Far across the plain, the enemy waited — countless in number, glittering with armor and pride.

Judah looked to heaven, not to their ranks.
He said, “Victory does not come by the sword, but by the will of Ha-Shem Tseva’ot.”

Then he raised his hand.
The drums began to thunder.
The sons of light marched into the fire.

🎶 Song 1 – March to Emmaus

Drums of Judah, thunder loud,
Lift the dust, a marching cloud!
Ha-Shem! Ha-Shem! The Lord of Hosts!
Lead us on through fire and ghosts!

Spears of faith, unbroken line,
Brothers bound by the holy sign.
Forward, sons of covenant flame —
Ha-Shem! We bear Your name!

🎶 Song 2 – The Battle Unfolds

Arrows fly and chariots scream,
Steel meets flame in a waking dream.
Ha-Shem Tseva’ot! The Lord of Hosts!
Strike the proud and rout their boasts!

Through smoke and thunder Judah rides,
Faith the shield where power hides.
Ha-Shem Tseva’ot! Hear our cry!
Let the tyrant’s banners die!

🎶 Song 3 – The Miracle of Victory

Silence falls — the battle done,
The mighty scattered, the few have won.
Ha-Shem Tseva’ot! Your hand prevailed,
The storm has broken, the tyrant failed.

Light returns upon the field,
A glow the heavens cannot shield.
Ha-Shem, our strength, our endless flame,
We bless Your holy name!

🎙️ Narration 2 – After the Battle

When the sun rose over Emmaus, the field was still.
The mighty had fallen; the few had stood.

The people of Judah knelt upon the earth —
not to boast, but to give thanks.
They had seen with their own eyes
that the hand of Ha-Shem was strong.

From the smoke rose the sound of prayer,
and upon the wind, the first whisper of light.

🕯 SECTION V — THE ELEPHANTS OF BEIT-ZECHARIAH

🎙️ Narration 1 – The Giants of War

From Emmaus they marched again,
their hearts lifted by victory,
their ranks thinned by the fallen.

But in the valley of Beit-Zechariah
the enemy returned with elephants of war —
towers of bronze, tusks like spears,
thunder moving upon the earth.

Judah’s line wavered;
the beasts crushed the stones beneath their feet.

Then Eleazar, brother of Judah,
saw one giant pressing toward him.
He cried, “For Ha-Shem and for Israel!”
and ran beneath its shadow.

🎶 Song 1 – Before the Charge

The ground trembles, the sky is dim,
Giants of iron drawing near.
Ha-Shem, my heart will not fear them,
Your voice alone I hear.

Brothers, hold the line once more,
Though death may walk beside.
If one must fall to close the door,
Let me be the one to die.

🎶 Song 2 – Eleazar’s Descent (The Sacrifice Motif)

Beneath the beast I crawl in flame,
Its armor burns, yet I remain.
Ha-Shem, receive my final breath —
A life for faith, a crown of death.

Lift up my soul, though crushed by stone,
Let Zion live, though I am gone.
Ha-Shem… Ha-Shem… remember me,
When Israel’s light again shall be.

🎶 Song 3 – Chorus of Lamentation

He fell beneath the thundering stone,
His faith the fire that lit the field.
No greater love has Israel known,
Than one who would not yield.

Mashiach, remember the fallen,
The faithful who would not flee.
Their blood is the seed of the promise —
The dawn our eyes shall see.

🎙️ Narration 2 – The Aftermath

The earth shook — then was still.
Where the elephant fell, so too lay Eleazar.

His brothers found him beneath the beast,
his hand still clutching the broken spear.

They wept, yet they did not curse the heavens,
for they knew his death was not in vain.

Through his sacrifice the people stood again,
and the name of Ha-Shem was honored.

From that place of sorrow
rose the promise of redemption.

🏛 SECTION VI — CLEANSING AND REDEDICATION

🎙Narration 1 – Return to the Holy City

When the battles ended, the sons of Judah returned to the holy city.
The smoke of war still clung to the stones,
and the gates of the Temple hung broken.

They entered in silence.
The idols lay shattered, the altar stained with the blood of swine.
But upon those defiled steps, they knelt and wept.

Judah lifted his eyes and said,
“Baruch Ha-Shem — blessed be the Name.
This house shall be cleansed.”

And so the people began the work of rededication.

🎶 Song 1 – Return to the Temple

Through smoke and ruin we come once more,
To tread the stones our fathers blessed.
Baruch Ha-Shem, the war is o’er,
The holy mount finds rest.

Sweep clean the altar, clear the flame,
Cast down the idols’ stain.
Baruch Ha-Shem, restore the name,
Make holy ground again.

🎶 Song 2 – Finding the Oil

Only one vessel of oil remains,
Sealed and pure from ancient days.
Baruch Ha-Shem, a spark divine,
Enough to light but a single night.

Yet faith believes beyond the hour,
A flame once lit shall never fade.
Baruch Ha-Shem, Your secret power,
Turns darkness into day.

🎶 Song 3 – Lighting the Menorah

Light the lamp! The oil is found!
Let praise and joy resound!
Baruch Ha-Shem! The night is done,
The dawn of peace begun.

Each flame a prayer, each spark a vow,
The Holy House restored.
Baruch Ha-Shem, we thank You now,
Forever be adored.

🎙Narration 2 – The Miracle of Light

When the work was done, they found one small jar of oil,
sealed and pure, marked with the seal of the High Priest.

It was enough for but one night.
Yet they kindled the menorah,
and as its flames rose, the people sang, “Baruch Ha-Shem.”

Day after day the fire burned, and did not fade.
A miracle before their eyes —
proof that the Light of Ha-Shem can never be extinguished.

SECTION VII — HANUKKAH: THE LIGHT ENDURES

🎙️ Narration 1 – The Eighth Day

On the eighth day the flames still burned.
The oil was spent, yet the light remained.

Word spread through every valley and hill:
Ha-Shem had remembered His people.

The Temple shone again,
its walls alive with the glow of holiness.
Children laughed, elders wept,
and the name of Ha-Shem was sung upon every tongue.

This day they called Hanukkah
the Feast of Dedication, the Festival of Light.

🎶 Song 1 – The First Morning of Light

The night is gone, the stars grow still,
The mountain breathes, the air is clear.
Ha-Shem, Or ha-Olam,
Your light returns — You are here.

Seven nights the flame has shone,
On this, the eighth, it still burns on.
Ha-Shem, Or ha-Olam,
Forever be our dawn.

🎶 Song 2 – Procession of Light

Lift up your lamps, O Israel,
Let every heart give flame!
Baruch Ha-Shem, the darkness fell,
Yet faith remains the same.

Baruch Ha-Shem, the Temple stands,
The covenant restored!
Our fathers’ fire in faithful hands,
Baruch Ha-Shem, adored!

🎶 Song 3 – Grand Finale: “Nes Gadol Hayah Sham”

From ashes rose the house of prayer,
From sorrow came the song!
Nes Gadol Hayah Sham
The light endures, the faith is strong!

Ha-Shem! The Mighty One of old,
Your promise lives, Your word is told.
Nes Gadol Hayah Sham! We sing!
Eternal flame, our God, our King!

Nes Gadol Hayah Sham!
Nes Gadol Hayah Sham!
Forever burns the holy flame —
Ha-Shem, be praised, forever the same!

🎙️ Narration 2 – The Light Endures

So the people rejoiced and gave thanks.
They rededicated the altar
and set the menorah to burn each year in remembrance.

Generations have come and gone,
yet the flame still shines in every home —
a symbol of faith that cannot die.

For a great miracle happened there —
Nes Gadol Hayah Sham
and the Light of Ha-Shem endures forever.

🎺 Final Cue – Tekiah Gedolah

(Live shofar blast, ~30 seconds; the menorah’s flames remain as lights fade to black.)
